Apple Life Cycle And Parts Of Apple Printables And Hands-On Activities
Apple themed hands on activities for children
As the leaves begin to change and fall from trees, the crisp scent of autumn begins to fill the air. This time of year is the perfect opportunity to explore apples and all the fun science activities that can be done with them. Here are a few hands-on apple themed activities that children will love!
Apple Tasting Games
There are so many varieties of apples, and this activity can be a lot of fun for kids. Purchase 5-6 different types of apples and let kids taste test them. Have them jot down their opinions on taste, texture, and sweetness/hardness using sticky notes or a white board. Then, survey the group to find out which apple was the most popular or least popular.
Apple Sink or Float
In this activity, cut pieces of apple in varying sizes. Fill a bowl with water, and let kids predict which piece of apple will sink or float. Then, drop the apples into the water and see if the predictions were correct. This experiment teaches kids about buoyancy and density.
Apple Collage
Set out a variety of materials such as construction paper, cotton balls, googly eyes, and glue. Have children create apple-themed collages using these materials.
Apple Science Experiment
Cut an apple into quarters. Place each quarter into a separate bowl and add a different liquid, such as lemon juice, vinegar, or water. Observe and compare what happens to each piece of apple over time.
Instructions:
- Wash and dry the apple thoroughly.
- Use a sharp knife to cut the apple in half, lengthwise.
- Take one half of the apple and place it cut-side down on a cutting board.
- Slice the half into quarters, cutting through the core. Repeat with the other half.
- Use a paring knife or your fingers to remove the seeds and stem from each quarter.
- Place each quarter into a separate bowl.
- Add a different liquid to each bowl. For example, you could add lemon juice to one bowl, vinegar to another, and water to a third.
- Gently stir the apples to ensure they are coated in the liquid.
- Observe the apples over time. Check them every 10-15 minutes for the next hour or two.
- Compare the apples in each bowl. Did the liquid have any effect on the apples? Did any of the apples change color or texture more than the others? Are there any differences in taste or smell?
- Take notes on your observations.
- Draw conclusions based on your observations and notes. What did you observe and why might this be happening?
Apple Pie Sensory Bin
Fill a bin with water beads and plastic apples. Children can use their hands to explore and play with the materials.
Apple Puzzles
Cut apple shapes out of cardboard and then cut each apple into several pieces. Children can use the pieces to put the apple back together like a puzzle.
Johnny Appleseed Story Time
Read the story of Johnny Appleseed to children and then have them create their own apple-themed artwork based on the story.
