You are invited to download the picture sorting cards with mothers and their young–learning printables for preschool and kindergarten children. Use this resource with photographs to create hands-on spring and summer activities for your students. This resource will be helpful if you plan to explore animals in your Montessori and early childhood classroom.

Teaching about Animals in the Montessori Classroom
Teaching about animals to kids in the Montessori classroom is an exciting and interactive learning opportunity. Through hands-on activities, children explore different animals’ unique characteristics, habitats, and behaviors. They learn about food chains, adaptations, and how to classify animals into groups.
Activities like matching games, puzzles, and sensory bins enhance their knowledge retention and help children develop their cognitive and sensory skills. Children also learn empathy and respect for all living creatures, which fosters a positive attitude toward conservation and environmental awareness. Overall, teaching about animals in the Montessori classroom is an enjoyable and enriching experience for children.
In a Montessori classroom, teaching children about mother animals and their offspring can be a valuable and engaging activity. This provides an opportunity to introduce children to different animal species and the characteristics that make them unique. The children can learn about the different names for baby animals, and how they are nurtured by their mothers.
This lesson can be enhanced with books, videos, and pictures to help children connect with the different animals and their offspring. Through this lesson, children can develop empathy and an understanding of different animal behaviors and their critical role in our environment.
Mothers and Their Young Animals Sort Printable
With Mother’s Day just around the corner. I created a printable for that special occasion. You are invited to download the free sorting animal cards – Mothers and Their Young. These are also great for children to do a pairing activity – match animals and their babies.
Print on card stock and laminate for longer use. After cutting cards, draw with a marker or stick dot stickers to the back of each set – one color for each set. Place the label cards in a row. Invite the child to sort cards into two categories. After the child completed the task, invite him or her to flip the cards and self-check. Each card has to be under the correct category based on the dot color.

Younger children can be encouraged to match animal pictures when printed twice. Older children might be inspired to research and create their own book about mothers and their young living in your area.
Here is what’s included:
- 2 x label cards
- 10 x labeled cards featuring female animals
- 10 x labeled cards featuring animal young
