One of my favorite parts of Montessori education is the process of teaching children to read and write. At home, we have done a good solid preparation for the first stages of reading with my daughter. She has experience matching objects with pictures, works to develop logical thinking and comprehension with pre-reading cards, we often play “I spy game”, and read books every day. Now the time has come to start learning sounds with Sandpaper letters. In order to assist her in this process, I made phonetic initial sound cards.

Montessori Initial Sound Cards pack contains 26 pages.

Each page presents one letter with 10 corresponding initial sound pictures. Except  “o” “x” “z” “u” and “y” which have 9 corresponding pictures or less. Montessori Initial Sound Cards are designed to facilitate to the process of learning to read in an addition to Montessori Language materials,
sound games, and phonemic awareness.
Most of the pictures are phonetic or have a phonogram in them.

I found that it is not easy to gather a good collection of objects to include in sound games and learning to read activities. Montessori Services offer a wonderful collection of language materials for early readers.

This is an assortment of 100 objects. Have fun adding your own unique finds to this starter collection.

Appropriate for a variety of language games most beginning sounds are represented (x is not a beginning sound) and most of the objects are phonetic or have a phonogram in them.

The objects range in size from ½” to 2½”.

Set includes presentation suggestions and a link to a downloadable PDF of Language Object Labels you can print yourself. (Use this link to see what is included in this set.) Ages 3 and up.

As a first independent reading activity, children will read phonetically spelled word labels and match the labels with a small object. Children are attracted to the small objects and soon will realize that groups of letters make words and have meaning. Set includes:
30 Assorted Objects (see below)
Durable Word Labels wipe clean; 2½” x 1″
Clear Plastic Box (B106) to hold the objects
Clear Plastic Box (B530) to hold the labels
Presentation SuggestionsIncludes: ant, ax, bag, bell, box, bug, can, cat, crab, dog, drum, fan, flag, frog, golf club, hat, hen, lid, mat, milk, mop, mug, peg, pig, pot, rabbit, rat, rod, tag, and tub.Phonetic Object Box 2

Introduce combinations of letters/sounds (such as sh or ee), by placing one of these small objects with its word label in a set of phonetic objects. The word for each object contains one of the key phonogram sounds. Long-lasting labels wipe clean; 2 1/2″ x 1″. Items may vary from those shown. Ages 3 and up.

Please note: Many of the objects used in this set are also included in the Language Object Starter Set (L850) and/or our smaller language sets.
