“A child who has become master of his acts through long and repeated exercises, and who has been encouraged by the pleasant and interesting activities in which he has been engaged, is a child filled with health and joy and remarkable for his calmness and discipline.” Maria Montessori
We introduced this practical life activity in our Preschool Montessori classroom in the beginning of the year when children were getting to now each other. It served purpose of encouraging children to communicate and interact in a positive way.
Hair grooming. Montessori practical life activity.
- Set up table with a mirror, hair brushes, wipes ( to clean hair brushes after use), hair clips
- Children take turns to groom each other’s hair and create a hair style using clips and ties.
Warning: If you decide to introduce this practical life activity, remember some children might want to include hair cutting in their services too. We had one incident. Just watch for those cheeky ones.
Needless to say, our preschoolers loved it. Sometimes teachers got a treat too with a messy but lovely hairstyle.
Around Christmas time we added extension to this practical life exercise. We included photography lesson: teaching use of technology (digital photo camera)
Every child received Camera License month before Christmas. They all had a lesson on using camera and demonstrated that they were able to operate it correctly. Photo shooting activity was set up next to grooming exercise with decorated photo shoot area, camera and Christmas costume attributes like reindeer nose, Santa’s hat, etc. Children worked in pairs. First they groomed each other’s hair and put Christmas costume on. Then they took photos of each other.
It was truly a valuable lesson, because children learnt to interact with each other and also use camera with care and purpose.
