Learning to read the Montessori way

Montessori education emphasizes teaching children to read in a natural, holistic way. This approach encourages educators to use tactile materials, like sandpaper letters and moveable alphabets, to support phonetic skills. In order to encourage children to develop a love for reading, Montessori teachers emphasize the importance of storytelling and reading aloud. They also encourage independent reading by creating inviting reading spaces and allowing children to choose their own books. By taking a thoughtful and individualized approach to teaching reading, Montessori education sets children up for a lifetime of learning and exploration.

Phonics the Montessori Way

Phonics instruction in the Montessori method strives to make learning to read and write a joyful experience by incorporating multisensory activities and focusing on individualized learning. Students use tactile materials, such as sandpaper letters, to trace and feel each letter’s shape as they say the sound. They also work with moveable alphabet letters to build words and explore spelling patterns. The Montessori method emphasizes a child-centered approach, where teachers observe each student’s progress and adapt instruction to meet their needs. This approach fosters a love of learning and empowers students to become confident readers and writers.

Learning to write the Montessori way

Writing in a Montessori classroom is taught through a step-by-step process that emphasizes the importance of hands-on experiences and individualized learning. Children first learn to trace letters with sandpaper letters before moving on to writing on paper. They are encouraged to write about topics that interest them and are given the freedom to make mistakes and learn from them. The Montessori approach to writing also values meaningful communication over perfect penmanship, fostering confidence in young writers. Overall, Montessori’s focus on self-directed learning and child-centered education creates a nurturing environment where children can develop strong writing skills.
